PADI vs. SSI: Can You Dive with Scuba School Bonaire?

Scroll Down

If you’ve ever learned to scuba dive, you’ve probably heard of PADI. In fact, many people don’t even say they’re getting their diving certification. They say they’re getting their PADI! But did you know that PADI isn’t the only internationally recognized diving organization?

At Scuba School Bonaire, I teach diving courses through SSI (Scuba Schools International). And one of the things I’ve noticed is that people sometimes think they can’t dive with us because they already have a PADI certification. Fortunately, that’s not how it works!

Whether you’re a PADI or SSI diver, you’re welcome at Scuba School Bonaire. Let me explain a little more about the differences and what they mean for your diving holiday on Bonaire.

What’s the Difference Between PADI and SSI?

PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) and SSI (Scuba Schools International) are two internationally recognized organizations that provide scuba diving education and certifications.

PADI is probably the name most people recognize. It’s been around for decades and has become so well known that many people associate the word PADI with scuba diving in general.

SSI offers a similar range of recreational diving courses, from learning to dive for the first time to continuing your education with more advanced training and specialties.

Both organizations follow internationally recognized training standards. For example, their Open Water Diver programs meet the requirements of ISO 24801-2, the international standard for recreational autonomous divers.

That doesn’t mean every course is exactly the same. The teaching materials, course structure and certification systems can be different. But at the same certification level, the fundamental diving skills and safety requirements are comparable.

I’ve worked with different diving education systems myself. Before moving to Bonaire in 2017, I was already teaching diving courses in the Netherlands through SSI and CMAS/NOB. Here on Bonaire, I continue sharing my passion for diving through SSI.

For me, the most important thing isn’t the name on your certification card. It’s that you’ve received proper training, feel comfortable underwater and know how to dive safely.

Can You Dive with Us If You’re PADI Certified?

Yes, absolutely!

If you already have a PADI diving certification, you don’t need to get a new SSI certification just to join one of our guided dives. Your existing certification is recognized, and we can look at which diving activities are suitable for your experience and qualification level.

Before we go diving, I like to know a little more about your diving background. How many dives have you completed? When was your last dive? And how comfortable do you feel underwater? Someone who completed their Open Water course several years ago and hasn’t been diving since may have different needs from someone who dives regularly.

That’s why I prefer to get to know the people I’m diving with instead of simply putting everyone into one large group. At Scuba School Bonaire, I mainly guide individuals, couples, families and small groups of people who already know each other. We can take our time, choose dive sites that suit your experience and enjoy Bonaire’s underwater world without feeling rushed.

So whether your certification says PADI or SSI, you’re very welcome to contact me about diving together.

Can You Continue Your Diving Education with SSI?

This is another question that sometimes causes confusion.

Let’s say you completed your PADI Open Water Diver course a few years ago, and now you’re visiting Bonaire. You’d like to improve your diving skills or take another course, but the dive school you’re interested in teaches SSI.

Do you have to start all over again?

In many cases, no.

SSI recognizes certifications from other recognized diving organizations, including PADI. This means your existing certification may qualify you to continue your diving education through SSI.

For example, someone with a PADI Open Water Diver certification may be eligible for an SSI advanced training program or specialty course, depending on the specific requirements.

Of course, every course has its own prerequisites. Some require a certain certification level, previous diving experience or additional training.

If you’re interested in continuing your education, just let me know which certification you currently have and what you’d like to learn. We can look at the available options together.

One thing that’s good to understand is that continuing your education through another organization isn’t quite the same as automatically exchanging one certification card for another. You’ll still need to meet the requirements of the course or certification you’re applying for.

So, Does It Matter Which Certification You Have?

For recreational diving, both PADI and SSI offer internationally recognized certifications. What matters is having the appropriate qualification and experience for the dive you’re planning.

If you’re thinking about learning to dive for the first time, I’d encourage you to look beyond the name of the training organization. Find a diving instructor you feel comfortable with, ask questions and choose a learning environment that suits you.

That’s also how I approach diving at Scuba School Bonaire. I enjoy teaching and guiding people in a relaxed atmosphere, where there’s time for questions and personal attention.

Some people learn quickly, while others need a little more time to feel confident underwater. And that’s perfectly fine.

Diving should be something you enjoy, not something you feel pressured to do.
